This sweater is my go-to cozy piece… and I picked it out without a second thought this morning: it’s foggy, chilly, and my toddler was up all night with a fever. Kudos to the hubby for being “on call” all night with her while I attended to the baby!

Today is the 5th anniversary of our engagement! I never would have imagined all that life had in store for us way back then. Fast forward five years, and we have two beautiful girls and a flourishing relationship, lots of travel behind us, and more big changes on the horizon. Wow. It’s been a great five years. Thank you, JC!

So here’s a confession: I realized after seeing the pics that this outfit doesn’t quite work!
It’s a standard case of mixed metaphors. When I see blue and white stripes, I think nautical. And when I see this tan vest, I think safari. (Leopard print shoes also make me think of jungle animals, but that’s another matter.) Nautical + safari = two worlds that don’t belong together!
Colorwise, I think this outfit also doesn’t quite work, just because blue and white seems to call for a clear, bright color (red!) to go with it, and the safari tan seems dull and dowdy with it, not to mention the shoes. Probably metallic t-strap sandals or leather strappy sandals would work better.
Another problem: the shapes are too boxy and square. The lines of the vest are quite square, so I think it would contrast nicely with some kind of flowy, flowery dress in a lightweight fabric like silk. But paired with a long a-line maxi skirt in thick jersey, it just doesn’t work. Maybe the fabrics are too similar.
It is quite comfortable, though — and that’s probably why I put it on this morning in the first place! And it seems to work from the waist up. Another lesson learned…

I fell in love with this Kate Spade tote the second I saw it — not just because I actually do eat cake for breakfast quite frequently (especially carrot cake!) but because it seems to encapsulate a philosophy that life is to be enjoyed with spontaneity in the midst of all the necessary obligations that we all carry. So why *not* start off with a big slice of birthday cake… and maybe put some jazz on while doing the dishes? Why not add color and joie de vivre to life? Also, on a more practical level, the tote makes for a great baby bag!
